For over a year, ICEI has been working on the Climate of Change project: The Path to Creating and Strengthening an Environmentally Conscious Generation in Mozambique, a 30-month initiative funded by the European Union. Key partners in this initiative include WeWorld – GVC Onlus (the lead partner), Associação Centro Terra Viva, and CNV – Conselho Nacional de Voluntariado. Together, these organizations strive to promote effective environmental governance in Mozambique by collaborating closely with local groups across the country. The Climate of Change project not only focuses on enhancing agricultural and sustainability knowledge but also emphasizes the importance of dialogue between national and international organizations.

In July 2024, ICEI and its project partners launched an initiative called Microfinance for Creating and Strengthening an Environmentally Conscious Generation in Mozambique. This program provides microfinancing grants totaling €60.000, to be distributed among the provinces of Maputo, Zambézia, Nampula, and Cabo Delgado.

The aim of this initiative is to inspire actions to fight climate change. This includes innovative natural resource management and the environmental conservation and monitoring efforts by civil society. A key aspect of the project is its commitment to promoting employment among youth and women.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) interested in this initiative will have the opportunity to acquire and enhance skills in local environmental management through a series of training sessions scheduled throughout the project.

At the start of the application process, 378 organizations requested application documents, and by the end of August, 99 applications were submitted.

After the application deadline, a series of online workshops were conducted for NGOs and CBOs. These workshops covered topics such as intervention logic and sustainability, monitoring plans, logical frameworks, resource allocation, activity planning, budgeting, reporting, and accounting. The workshops had strong participation, with at least 65 organizations actively involved.

The initial selection phase concluded in September 2024, with 69 candidates considered qualified. Individual consulting sessions were then held with each organization to review their proposals and adapt them with the project’s goals.

Among the selected organizations are 6 CBOs and 2 NGOs representing various provinces of Mozambique, showcasing the project’s widespread geographical reach.

The duration of the projects will be 9 months, with a planned start in November 2024.
