In Myanmar, we are carrying forward many activities  aimed to promote responsible tourism. Many events of training and exchange of skills, such as the recently concluded Training held at Nyaung Shwe, are at the core of our action.

Among others, a training session on “Biodiversity and sustainable tourism” has been conducted on January 14-16, 2019.

This three-day training was intensely participated by nearly 40 tourist guides coming from the surroundings of Inle lake, an area abundant with natural and cultural attractions, with a still huge potential for tourist growth.

The trainer who animated the group, with a substantial experience in the tourist sector, was Dr Thein Aung (Chairman of MBNS).

The training contents covered many aspects, including, among others: the importance of protecting biodiversity in Myanmar; the urgent need of promoting actions to preserve wildlife; the hallmarks of sustainable tourism– focusing on the so-called nature-based-tourism – and, finally, a participative discussion on the benefits and positive impacts for local communities.

Other sessions had a more operational focus and were mainly oriented to the evaluation and the implementation of actions and strategies aimed to create sustainable tourism routes in the region.

Among others, the discussion addressed the crucial issues of pollution and waste disposal. Notably, after showing a short video  on the global problem of plastic waste management, some local restaurant owners were invited to speak. They explained that they had already been promoting several good practices aimed to reduce pollution and to disseminate more environmentally friendly products.

In fact, ICEI is just committed to this objective: to network and to enhance the competences of tourist operators, to encourage the dissemination of best practices  and feasible strategies  to fight the indiscriminate use of plastics, which can today be easily replaced  – in many cases – by other materials or even by simple devices that should make us reflect on the negative impacts of using disposables.
